How Does it Work?

What Is It? Give Real Change is an action-oriented initiative designed to raise funds, promote citizen engagement and contribute meaningfully to our community’s efforts to make homelessness rare, short-lived and non-recurring. The program is a partnership between the Downtown Business Association (DBA) and the Murphy Center and underwritten by First National Bank, the “Official Bank of Downtown Fort Collins”.

How it Works: Businesses host coin-collection boxes and marketing/educational materials related to Give Real Change and the issue of homelessness. Coin-collection boxes provide customers with the opportunity to donate to a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization engaged in best-practice solutions to homelessness.

Program Timeline: The pilot campaign will run from Memorial Day through Labor Day 2018.

How to Get Involved: Participating in Give Real Change is easy: Simply host Give Real Change materials at your location! Materials include a small, lockable coin-collection box for your countertop, a business card about the Murphy Center, a Give Real Change poster, and a window decal that signals your participation.

How are Donations Accepted and Collected? Individuals can contribute by placing checks, cash or change into the coin-collection box. Murphy Center staff and volunteers will visit your store regularly to empty the box. Murphy Center staff will also maintain separate accounting for all participating businesses, so you can always know how much your customers have contributed.

Where does the Money Go?

The Murphy Center was established in March 2009 as a one-stop resource center originally envisioned to serve between 30-40 guests a day and now serves more than 160 individuals per day with over 40,000 guest visits annually.  Guests of the Murphy Center include those experiencing or in jeopardy of homelessness.

Our goal is to provide a continuum of services, in a single location, to help people to survive through crisis, move forward into stabilization and ultimately to thrive in a return to self-sufficiency while helping our community fulfill its vision to make homelessness rare, short-lived and non-recurring.  Service areas include: mental health & substance abuse, employment, housing, benefits applications, transportation, veteran and disability assistance.

The Murphy Center serves four main roles in our community:

  1. Provides the infrastructure for and facilitates a single location for more than 3,000 individuals (including families/children) to efficiently access a wide array of services
  2. Provides Core Human Services, with more than 40,000 guest interactions each year to address day to day needs (showers, laundry, lockers, computers, phones, food, survival supplies and more)
  3. Serves as morning day shelter for more than 100 guests each day providing a continental breakfast, coffee, a warm and safe environment and the opportunity to prepare for the day as well as a small play area for children.
  4. Creates a sustainable path to stable housing.
